History of Thai Pusam - Protection from Evil Eye, Enemies, Enable Victory in Life

ThaiPusam is a "Mandaamin" dedicated to the male god Lord Karthikeya or Lord Subramania or also popularly called as "Lord Muruga". He is a Hindu God, a deity of youth, a spiritual power, virtue of piety, is a dutiful son hales from a respected family, is the second son born to "Lord Shiva" and "Goddess Parvati". This day is a "fulfillment of religious obligations" a day for devoted prayers, penance and fasting, which falls on the very auspicious and unique month, a month for harvest of crops, prayers to Sun God, Prayers to Cows (Gomatha) and a month of religious celebrations, is all in a spectacle in nature, falls on the luni-solar phase of the moon, being the cycles of the moon which form the basis for time measure as per the lunisolar calendar and ThaiPusam is a festival based on Solar Cycles. This day is in a Bright Phase for spiritual practices, performing puja, meditation and dedicated prayers, which is going to be a very effective month achieving growth and cherish nourishment.

Thai Pusam is a special day to worship "Lord Muruga" which is celebrated in a grand manner, at all the Shrines of Lord Muruga especially in "Arupadai Veedu". This festival is a fast and energetic, celebrated all over the Universe by Hindu's, to honour Lord Muruga, the "God of War" for his works and protection, by taking "Cavadee" or "Kavadi", as devotees shoulder the decorated piece of carved wooden structure with flowers in a semi-circle form, made of bamboo and rods, covered with Peacock Feathers, Coconut leaves, surrounded with artists performing music, dance and "Milk Kavadi" or out of devotion they go to extreme step of fastening a metal hook in their Skin of their backs, and the skin tugs get fixed so gracefully they grunt and growl chanting Lord Muruga spiritual and devotional trance who believe to bring them very close to Lord Muruga and the trance can be further persuaded with chanting "Skanda Shashi Kavasam" prayers to Lord Muruga or drumming and incensed up to the abode of Lord Muruga are some of the icon of the festival is a highest point of celebrations.

On the Thai Pusam day devotees go to their fullest extent to show their utmost devotion, piercing metal skewers called "Vel" in the form of spear, skewing at the tip of the tongue and another type of devotion to Lord Muruga a "Vel" skewing through one side of the cheek from one end through the mouth to the other end of the cheek, symbolically devoted to Lord Muruga for number of reasons and few are:

1. Renounce temporarily gift of speech, skewing the "Vel", who have profitable crop of that year
2.  Fastening metal hook in their Skin of their backs, who is blessed with disease free life
3. Milk Kavadi carrying the pot milk, is blessed with purity and prosperity
