Who are Kamadeva and Rati?

He is a handsome young man with sharp features and green complexioned. He carries five arrows that permeate the air with the fragrance of five different flowers namely, Ashoka flowers, white lotuses, blue lotuses, jasmine flowers and mango flowers. He rides a parrot and is seen accompanied by other celestial beauties including the goddess of spring, Vasantha. It is said that he is the son of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini and some Vedic experts claim that he is the son of Brahma. He is also worshipped by married couples for good understanding between them and long term marital life.

Rati, on the other hand, is Kamadeva’s consort and goddess of love and passion. Her name signifies passion, eroticism and carnal desire. She is a beautiful maiden who enchants her companion and together they form the perfect love couple. In the Puranas, she is depicted as someone with a smiling face, fair complexioned and goes by the name of Subhangi, a full bosomed damsel and Kamadeva falls flat for her beautiful eyes, face, hair, legs, thighs and glowing skin.
