The Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity is also called "Varamahalakshmi" is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is one of the glorious forms of Goddess Mahalakshmi. Significance of Varalakshmi Vrat
Varalakshmi Puja is an important Ritual performed by married women for the long life of their husband and other family members. According to ancient scriptures worshipping Goddess Varalakshmi is equivalent to worshipping the Ashta-Lakshmi the Eight Goddess of Wealth. The Ashta-Lakshmi's are Sri Adi / Maha Lakshmi (Beginning), Dhana Lakshmi (Wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (Material), Gaja Lakshmi (Strength), Santana Lakshmi (Progeny), Veera / Dhairya Lakshmi (Braveness), Jaya/Vijaya Lakshmi (Victory), Vidya Lakshmi (Wisdom).
Varalakshmi Puja takes place on Shukla Paksha, Dwadashi on the last Friday of Shravana month and the Goddess name commencing with "Sri" denotes wealth and everything in life that is auspicious namely Mastery, Longevity, Health, Food and Nourishment, Wealth, Life blessed with Children's, Full life of hundred years, Disease Free Life and many more attributed to prosperity, abundance and blessing with all desires in life.
Goddes Mahalakshmi in Kolhapur is called as Goddess Ambabai was built during Chalukya regime, is mounted on a platform made of stone of height 3 feet and the main deity is made up of Gemstone which is said to be weighed 40 kilograms. The Vahana is lion also made up of Stone, stands behind Goddess Mahalakshmi is crowned with Sheshnag, the serpent of Lord Vishnu. Goddess Mahalakshmi is with her four hands, of symbolic value. The lower right hand holds Mhalunga (A Citrus Fruit), Upper right hand holds a mace (Kaumodaki) is of Lord Vishnu, Upper Left is holding a Shield and in the lower left is holding a bowl (Panpatra).
There is a special celebration called "Kirnotsav Celebration" when the rays of the sun fall directly on the feet of Goddess Mahalakshmi in Kolhapur and it is said that Lord Sun, pays his respect to Ambabai Goddess Mahalakshmi for three days in a year and it is called as "Ratha Saptami". The three days falls on (1) 31st January and 9th November, (2) 1st February and 10th November, (3) 2nd February and 11th November.
Once a fight broke between Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi in Vaikuntha (Heaven). A Sage Bhrigumni kicks Lord Vishnu on his chest. The Lord though he is the eternal supreme and controller of universe, did not counter-attack or retaliate or shown his anger, instead he greeted him with great hospitality and made it sure that his foot is not in pain, kicking him hard. Also he added that my chest is stronger than your feet and will not hurt me, and started pressing his foot to provide a relief of his pain. Goddess Lakshmi who was also witnessing this wicked gesture from the Sage, felt extremely furious of the Sage attitude as she resides in the chest of Lord Vishu. Lord Vishnu knew that the sage disrespected Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu shown a gentle approach and attitude towards the Sage, which is disliked by Goddess Lakshmi. This is when she decided to leave Vaikuntha and come down to Earth and she landed directly in Kolhapur. This is the place she lived and decided to stay here forever to bless the devotees who visits for her blessings.
