Lord Vamana is the fifth incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu wherein the lord manifested as a dwarf Brahmin before King Maha Bali during the Tretha Yuga. He was born on Bhadrapada Shudda Dwadashi in Shravana Nakshatra during a very auspicious time. Vamana, a Sanskrit word means dwarf or one with a small body. Once a demon King Mahabali ruled all the three worlds. The Gods and Devas (celestial beings) were extremely embarrassed of losing their kingdom prayed Maha Vishnu to expel Mahabali from Indra loka. When Mahabali was performing the powerful Ashwamedha Yagya, it was mandatory to offer a Brahmin anything that he asks for. That was the time when the Lord took the form of Vamana and asked for three-foot of land. Mahabali was happy to donate the equal measure of the three small feet unaware that he was being tricked.
But, the Lord grew into a gigantic form – Trivikrama— and measured the entire two worlds (Earth and Aaakash) with two gigantic steps and asked for the third. And the humble king showed his head and was pressed into the world below(Paatal). Thus, Lord Vishnu as Vamana saved the celestials from their dilemma. However, pleased with Mahabali’s integrity, Lord Vishnu offered blessings of protection, benevolence and immortality. The Vedic texts Shrimudagvad Purana and Vishnu Purana have elucidated in great detail the birth of Vamana avatar.
