Lord Vadukkunnathan Temple is also known as the Kailash of the South, and also is the place where Lord Shiva blessed the childless parents of Adi Shankaracharya with the boon of a progeny. The temple is situated in Trichur, in the southern state of Kerala in India. It is believed that Lord Adi Shankara wrote the greatest divine poetry of all times, Soundarya Lahari, that glorifies the virtues of goddess Parvati, in this temple.
The main deity Lord Vadukkunnathan is a hunter form of Lord Shiva, also known as Kirada Murthi, who gave Pashupathasthra to Arjuna to fight the Kauravas during the Kurukshetra war. A demon intervened and tried to disturb Arjuna’s penance. Lord Shiva appeared in the guise of a hunter to destroy the demon while Arjuna also fought the demon. The lord’s arrow killed the demon. But Arjuna argued that it was his arrow that killed the demon. An altercation occurred, and Arjuna hit the hunter with his bow which caused a wound to Lord Shiva. Finally, Arjuna realised his mistake and asked the lord to forgive him. To heal the wound, to this day, a huge amount of ghee is poured over the Shiva linga. This ritual has been going on for ages and therefore one cannot see the linga, but a mound of ghee – which does not melt – in its place.
Lord Vadakkunnathan is also the Lord of Trichur Pooram, a spectacular festival of caparisoned elephants, colorful lights, beats of Panchavadyam (an ensemble of five musical instruments), flags, festoons, and a wonderful display of fireworks. The Anayoottu festival which is the ritualistic feeding ceremony of elephants is also held on the premises of the Vadukkunnathan temple. There are shrines for Lord Maha Vishnu, Lord Shankara Narayana, Lord Rama, Lord Ganapathi, Lord Nataraja, Lord Ayyappan and Devi Bhagavathi.
As per temple historical data, it is believed that Lord Shiva once appeared in the dream of the then king of Kochi, and ordered him to celebrate the Pooram festival with great fanfare. Pujas and abhishekam would be performed on the lord, and all demigods from heaven would visit the temple to witness the event and get blessings of Lord Shiva.

Vadakkunnathan temple is built on the styles of Kerala architecture. It is believed that Lord Parashurama saw a self-manifested linga under a banyan tree which was consecrated as per Vedic rites and a temple was built later. Adi Shankaracharya’s parents worshipped the lord here to get progeny blessings and with the lord’s grace, Adi Shankara was born. Thrissur Pooram is a very important festival that is conducted in a grand manner under the auspices of Vadukkunnathan temple. Abhishekam is a popular ritual that is performed to the Lord Vadukkunathan. The ritual has been taking place for hundreds of years and therefore a solid mound of ghee has formed over the linga. Devotees get a scarp of this ghee as Prasada which has medicinal and herbal properties and is said to cure diseases. Worshipping Lord Vadukkunathan ends problems due to adversaries, and tough negativity. The ceremonies of the day to Lord Shiva increase psychological balance, spiritualism and consciousness.
