Tithi Nitya Devis Represent 16 Kalas and Lunar Phases of Moon

Sri Vidya upasana involves the worship of mother Shakti forms in relation to the 15 tithis or lunar days of the moon. There’s a unique relationship between the sun and the moon called tithi or lunar phase. For the 15 tithis of Shukla paksha (waxing phase) and 15 tithis of Krishna paksha (waning phase), a Devi is assigned called Tithi Nitya Devis. Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari is Adya Shakti or primordial energy who is Sat, Ananda and Poorna or Sadanandapoorna. Surrounding her are 15 Anga Devatas or Avarna Devatas who are called Nitya Devis. These Devis represent the Pancha Bhutas or five gross elements of the material cosmos and also represent 15 gunas. The moon is also one of the most important planets in Vedic astrology. This science of predictions not only judges a person from the lagna, but also studies the planetary positions from the moon. From New Moon to Full Moon and vice versa, the changing phases of the moon rules a person’s mind and emotions. It also plays a profound role in our lives in many other aspects.

Vedic shastras like Lakitopakhyanam, Dakshinamurthy Samhita, Vasistha Samhita, Tantrarajatantra, etc... explain that the Moon has 16 kalas or phases out of which 15 are visible and the 16th, which is that of Mother Tripura is beyond the visibility of the common man. These 16 kalas are ruled by the 16 Nitya Devis or Shodasa Nityas. The names of the 16 Nitya Devis are:-

  1. Maha Tripura Sundari
  2. Kameswari
  3. Bhagamalini
  4. Nityaklinna
  5. Bherunda
  6. Vanhivasini
  7. Maha Vajreswari
  8. Shivadooti (Roudri)
  9. Twarita
  10. Kulasundari
  11. Nitya
  12. Neelapataka
  13. Vijaya
  14. Sarvamangala
  15. Jwalamalini and
  16. Chidroopa (Chitra)

Out of these, the first is Maha Tripura Sundari who is Devi Para Shakti and hence Her Kala cannot be seen by normal souls. Therefore, only 15 kalas ruled by the Nithya Devis are visible. Also, in the Sri Chakra these 15 Nityas are present in the innermost circle while the mother is present in the central bindu. The Tithi Nityas also dominate the Kala Chakra in their capacity as supreme powers of the Sri Chakra. Worshipping the Tithi Devis on a specific tithi will fetch the devotees innumerable benefits. It may be noted that each of the goddesses of lunar phases should be worshipped with a specific yantra and mantra for achieving favourable results. For the first of the series of Tithi Nityas Devi Series of Homam Mother Tripura Sundari will be invoked. The goddess is the 16th day or full moon.
