Tirumoolar Siddhar is known as the grandfather of Siddhas. He lived 7000 years ago and is believed to be the disciple of Maharishi Nandinatha Devar or Nandeeswarar who preached and taught the nine Veda agamas or traditions. Lord Shiva first taught this Vedic literature to Goddess Parvati and then to himself. Tirumoolar was sent to the south by Nandinatha Devar to spread Shaiva Siddhanta which is the philosophy of Shaivism that considers Lord Shiva as the ultimate consciousness who leads one to the path of moksha.
Tirumoolar Siddhar achieved the eight siddhis (spiritual powers) and enlightenment from his guru Nandeeswarar. As a tribute to his learnings, he wrote the Tirumandiram, a Tamil poetic work that deals with body and soul. It covers over 3000 verses divided into nine sections called tantras that cover several aspects of ethics, spirituality, singing Lord Shiva’s praise, Siddha medicine, healing powers, astronomy, and physical culture.
One of the most significant 18 Siddhars of ancient times, Tirumoolar is referred to as ‘Nampiran’ meaning ‘our god’. Tirumoolar also taught the ethics of non-violence and abstinence from animal slaughter and alcohol. Some of his discoveries in the field of Siddha medicine are used in combating myocardial infarction, degenerative diseases, and depressive disorders.
It is said that Tirumoolar had witnessed the Ananda Tandava or the dance of delight of Lord Shiva. He attained meditative consciousness or ‘jeeva samadhi’ in Chidambaram, the land of Lord Nataraja.
Tirumoolar Siddhar Homam will be performed as part of the 18 Siddhars series of Homam on the day of Sashti which is a propitious day to revere Lord Muruga. Though their ultimate aim is to attain Lord Shiva, these self-realized beings looked up to Lord Muruga for higher learning, Kundalini Shakti, and knowledge of ancient medicines, etc. The Subramanya Gnanam (Knowledge of Subramanya), is a gift to mankind. The Siddhars could unravel many secrets hidden in the verses for their self-development and the sake of humanity at large.
Tirumoolar Siddhar Homam is performed to invoke one of the greatest disciples of Nandi Devar or Nandeeswarar Siddha. Invoking Tirumoolar Siddhar can bestow miracle blessings of healing diseases, suppressing depressive disorders, and attaining siddhis.
Invoking Tirumoolar Siddhar removes the effects of bad Karma and gives relief to ailments and planetary afflictions. The ritual also absolves sins and solves issues related to money, incurable diseases, spirituality and broken relationships. Tirumoolar Siddhar is one of the most visible Siddha on earth whose energies are felt by devotees to a great extent. Those who worship this Siddha can acquire supernatural powers and spiritual enlightenment. He rewards with miracle blessings of wealth, prosperity, longevity, and happiness when invoked. The greatest blessing that one can receive by revering Tirumoolar Siddha is getting a ‘darshan’ of the whole (Paripurna*) inside one's own body. Also, the ritual helps to attain knowledge, and spirituality that leads to the realization of god and grants liberation to the soul. Impurities of the mind are removed paving the way for extreme bliss, peace, and harmony.
*Paripurna or wholesomeness is a concept that is used to describe god. The words, ‘Paripurna Avatar’ are used to denote absolute incarnation.
Tirumoolar Siddhar Temple is located in Sathanur in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Situated on the outskirts of the village behind the Sathanur Ayyanar Temple, the jeeva samadhi or tomb of the Siddhar lies inside the temple premises. Thirumoolar Siddhar, the mystic man of Tamil Siddha medicine, is one of the 63 Nayanmars or popular saints of Shaivism. He is known as the leader of the saints by Sundarar, another saint. Performing pooja at the Thirumoolar Temple can bestow the miracle blessings of the saint for healing, spirituality, and material growth. Also, a person can attain siddhis, long life, and peace. The pooja also gives clarity of thoughts, knowledge, wisdom, and realize the true meaning of God.
