Lord Subramanya, Muruga, or Skanda, is a manifestation of Para Brahma and the primary deity of the Kaumara Tradition. He symbolises war and victory and is the supreme commander of the army of gods. In Chapter 11 of Shiva Purana’s Kailash Samhita, He’s also known as Guha.
Aiṃ Hrīṃ Śrīṃ Im Om Krom Bhrom Kraum Jhmraum
Namo Guhaya Bhutanam Guhasu Nihitaya Ca ||
Guhyaya Guhyarupaya Guhyagamavide Namah ||
Meaning: Salutations to Guha who resides in the Guha (heart) of all living beings. Who is secret (Guhyaya), who has a hidden form (Guhyarupaye), and who knows the secret Agamas (Guhyagamavide).
Therefore, Guhastra means Lord Muruga’s secret weapon that destroys external evil and internal clashes within the mind and the body.
The Vel or spear is a crucial weapon (astra) gifted to the lord by his mother, Goddess Parvati, to demolish the demon, Surapadman. The spear represents victory and contains the powers of Shakti, the mother who takes various forms to annihilate evil and establish harmony and righteousness.
The spiritual significance of the Vel lies in the fact that it denotes the mind and knowledge. It has a broad tip and a sharp edge and is very deep in length. The breadth represents the vast mind, and the sharpness denotes knowledge. The depth of the weapon is related to thoughts and the mind. Lord Subramanya’s Vel is not just an Asthra (a weapon released from the hand) but also a Sasthra (hand-held fighting equipment). It’s like a Meru yantra, the abode of Shakti’s various powers, and six Shaktis or Shat-Shaktis that add immense power to the weapon. These Shakti forms are as follows:
• Guhastra Mula Prakriti – The root cause of earthly existence from whom comes material pleasures of passion and love and worldly power of Artha or wealth. All powers, including that of the Vel, are derived from her.
• Guhastra Vagishwari – The goddess of knowledge, skills, and speech, Saraswathi resides in the Vel in its sharp tip.
• Guhastra Narayani – She emanates from the Vel the power of destruction because she’s responsible for the cosmic cycle of creation.
• Guhastra Samhara Raudri - The consort of Shiva, in his role as Rudra, personifies the fire element and destroys demonic forces and evil energies.
• Guhastra Maheshwari – She represents Maheshwara’s divine powerful energy that emits from the spear.
• Guhastra Gowri - The beautiful goddess who portrays that hard work and efforts help to achieve dreams and ambitions.
