Sanatana Dharma believes in the great mysticism of the universe which is divided into 14 worlds called Chaturdasa Bhuvanas. Srimad Bhagavad Puranam has described the divisions as seven higher level material worlds or lokas and seven lower level nether worlds or talas. However, the three well-known divisions are earth, heaven and atmosphere.
While the focus of Sapta Loka Homam will be on the seven upper worlds which consists of Satya Loka, Tapa Loka, Jana Loka, Mahar Loka, Svar Loka, Bhuvar Loka or Pitri Loka, and Bhur Loka which helps a person to achieves power, prosperity and longevity.
The Adho Lokas or nether worlds are called Athala, Vithala, Suthala, Rasaathala, Thalathala, Mahaathala, and Paathala. This world is insignificant to man as he has risen above these lokas and resides in Bhur Loka. Also, the soul travels upwards to attain the supreme consciousness in the Satya Loka. So, the emphasis of the ritual of the day lies in the Sapta Lokas, where the energies of the ritual travel from the earth to the Sapta Lokas in a step-by-step manner. Finally, the vibrations of the ritual from the earth plane reaches Vaikunta, where Lord Lakshmi Narayana resides, also to the world of supreme consciousness, to attain the linear, ultimate power, Lord Sadashiva.
Sapta Loka Homam will be performed on the Vedic New Year also called the Tamil New Year which marks the vernal equinox when the earth’s equator passes through the centre of the sun. This occurs twice a year during the months of March and September and the duration of the days and nights are almost equal. The Vedic New Year falls in the month of Chaithra/Chitra on April 14 to be precise. This is also celebrated as Mesha Sankranti when the Sun enters the zodiac sign Mesha or Aries. Performing supreme homas like Sapta Loka Homam is very propitious to receive blessings of multiple gods who reside in various planes of existence in the universe.
Sapta Loka Homam is a special and unique ritual that is unprecedented and involves invoking the gods and the places they dwell. It is also the path that the soul travels from Bhur Loka upward until it reaches Parama Padam. A total of ten homams will be performed to the representatives of the seven lokas and the ultimate consciousness above these Lokas, Lord Narayana and Lord Shiva. The purpose of performing the homam is to remove all doshas related to different lokas so that man can have a peaceful journey upward after death. The homam also attracts the inhabitants of these seven lokas to grant multiple of blessings.
Lord Ganesh is worshipped at the start of all Hindu religious ceremonies. He is the remover of obstacles and is associated with wisdom and great achievements. His consorts Siddhi and Buddhi are also invoked in the homam for rare spiriutal blessings.
Bhudevi is the goddess who signifies mother earth and she is Goddess Lakshmi’s form that symbolizes fertility. She resides in Bhu Loka and is responsible for all being living on it. The homa summons her powers to overcome challenges of land and property. The ritual also gives blessings of the goddess to win land and property conflicts, to remove planetary negative effects and provide immense prosperity and peace on earth.
Offering of libations like water and sesame seeds to the pitrus or ancestors of three generations not only satisfies them but elevates them to higher spiritual planes and this ceremony is called Pitru Tarpanam. Invoking pitrus solves challenges, and other problems like long suffering diseases, marriage delays, curses, etc.
Lord Indra is the lord of Swarga Loka (heaven). His weapons are thunder and lightning and therefore he is the god of rains. People worship Lord Indra for copious rains. Since drought brings famine and deaths, invoking Lord Indra can prevent the calamities and also attract blessings of planet Jupiter, power, fame, comforts, strength, leadership qualities, prosperity and happiness.
Sapta Rishis are seven divine sages who are popular in Vedic scriptures. The sapta rishis are Maharshi Marici, Atri Muni Maharshi, Angira Maharshi, Pulastya Maharshi, Pulaha Maharshi, Kratu Maharshi and Vasishta Maharshi. Sapta Rishi Homam washes away sins, protects against negative fore, evil and black magic/ occult energies. Sapta Loka Homam is a linear timeline escalation of energy that transcends beyond time and space to reach the immortal time loop of Vishnu Loka with a specific timeline and traverses further up to the abode of Lord Shiva in Kailash which has no timeline where only voidness or ‘shunyata’ exists. There’s nothing beyond this region, for it is the last destination of the soul.
From Earth to the land of Brahma (Satya Loka), the soul travels through a linear timeline, which means it moves in one straight direction, then traverses to Vaikunta, an immortal time loop, and lastly, the abode of Sadashiva, which isn’t time or space bound and the Soul achieves ‘shunyata’ and complete 'Kaivalya' (liberation).
Also, Sapta Loka Homam is incomplete without venerating the supreme forms, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Therefore invoking these gods becomes mandatory.
