Mahishasura Mardini is Goddess Durga who slays the buffalo-headed, extremely powerful demon Mahishasura, and Mardini means destroyer. She’s considered among the Ashta Shakti (eight powers of Durga) and in some Vedic texts she’s one of the Nava Durga forms or nine forms of Durga. The goddess slayed Chanda and Munda and therefore called Chandika or Chamunda.
The Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is dedicated to this form having the combined powers of the trinity gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. It’s also an offshoot of Devi Mahatmyam where in Devi takes the form of Chandika to annihilate Mahishasura. She has eighteen arms with many weapons and rides a lion. Goddess Mahishasura Mardini Chandika mitigates a person’s negative karma and grants victory over calamities and all types of challenges.
Mahishasura Mardini Chandika Homam will be performed on an auspicious Tuesday, also called ‘Mangal vaar’ to receive the innumerous blessings of the powerful deity who manifested from the combined energies of the trinity gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
Mahishasura Mardini Chandika Homam propitiates the mighty goddess, Adi Parashakti, and expresses one’s gratefulness to her. Also, demons represent negativity, meanness, higher passion, anger, cruelty, animalism, and impurity. The mother fighting the demons means she is fighting all these bad aspects in man – the Tamas Guna, which is impure, devoid of pure energy that doesn’t allow us to reach the higher chakras. Mother Mahishasura Mardini fights a battle between good and evil. And by worshipping the goddess, a person can purify his or her animalistic sexual nature present in the mind and body and transform into a perfect being.
