According to Padma Purana, Lord Vishnu took the form of Ekadasi, a female energy to kill Muran, a demon. The incident happened during the Margazhi month (December-January). Pleased with killing the demon, Lord Vishnu declares that whoever worships him on this day will reach Vaikunta or heaven.
Devotees fast and observe a strict vigil the whole night. They meditate, utter mantras, and sing verses praising the lord.
People queue up outside Vishnu temples at the auspicious time when the gate of Vaikunta opens, a symbolic gesture that means the lord has opened doors to heaven for attaining Moksha.
The day provides an opportunity for purifying one’s soul by removing all the Bad Karma and starting a new life afresh.
The Lord of Vaikunta is Vaikuntanathar or Lord Vishnu, the supreme deity of the heavens.
He appears standing, with Adi Sesha spreading his many heads like an umbrella above. Goddess Lakshmi is by the side, and the divine couple confer generous blessings on the devotees.
Invoking the lord Vaikuntanathar on Vaikunta Ekadashi is very special, as it heals all wounds and diseases, cleanses sins, and provides protection from dangers and unseen challenges.
Lord Vaikuntanathar is the lord who sustains life on earth, and He safeguards people from difficulties and mental conflicts, removes karma, and helps one to achieve goals, attain wealth, happiness, health, and prosperity.
Narayana Kavacham is a protective mantra described in Chapter 8 of the sixth Skanda of Bhagavada Purana. It worships Lord Narayana, the lord of cosmic consciousness.

Performing the ritual on the auspicious Vaikunta Ekadasi not only fetches the blessings of Lord Vishnu but also protects you and your family against the pitfalls of life.
Purusha Suktam is a hymn of the Rig Veda, dedicated to Purusha, the cosmic being or Lord Vishnu. The verses are also found in Shukla Yajur Veda Samhita and Atharva Veda Samhita and describe the spiritual unity of the universe.
The mantras are in a metre (15 verses in the Anustubh metre and the last in the Tristubh metre). It states the nature of Purusha, or the cosmic being, and the whole universe that exists in animate and inanimate form is considered the body of Purusha. He is omnipresent and omnipotent.
