Lord Kapila Homam and Lord Dattatreya Homam will be performed on Padmini Ekadashi which an important tithi that occurs once in three years as it falls on the eleventh day of Shukla paksha or the waxing moon phase. It’s observed in Adhi Maas or Malamaas which is an extra month or leap month, according to the Vedic calendar. This means that the month has 13 months instead of 12. In the English calendar, it falls during July-August and it’s also called Shukla Paksha Adhik Maas Ekadashi. People worship Lord Vishnu for fulfilling worldly desires. Observing rituals and other ceremonies in the name of the lord or his forms brings good health, spiritual growth, sincere devotion, happiness in the family, prosperity, and fulfills wishes. It also ensures a place in Lord Vishnu’s abode Vaikuntha after death.
The Puranas describe Kapila Rishi (sage) as an avatar of Lord Vishnu who came to earth to restore spiritual balance through his teachings. He is said to be the founder of Samkhya, the oldest of the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy.
Lord Kapila is regarded as a descendent of Manu, the first human being, and also the grandson of Lord Brahma or an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He’s also known for teaching Bhakti Yoga and the spiritual path of liberation. He radiates too much heat – tapas – that he burnt 60,000 sons of Vedic King Sagara to ashes. He’s also well-known in Buddhism and it’s said that his students built the city of Kapilavastu, which is the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
Lord Kapila's teachings are found in the Srimad Bhagavad Purana in which he prescribes certain methods to attain spiritual realization. He says that when there's an imbalance of the three gunas, then one of the gunas becomes predominant and the soul gets involved in an emotional imbalance. When the mind is turned inwards, it attaches itself to God, and man doesn’t seek any objects of the senses. This path is called Chittasanyamana which leads to moksha.
The Skanda Purana and Padma Purana mention Lord Kapila, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who descended on earth to spread true knowledge. Only sincere and spontaneous devotion (Bhakti) to Lord Narayana can help attain moksha. The devotion burns karmic bondages created by the senses and allows us to follow the path of liberation.
Lord Kapila Homam cleanses the body and purifies it of all impurities like lust and greed. Lord Kapila when invoked, helps to eliminate ‘Tamas Guna’ which is the quality of laziness, or lethargy. The Homa removes darkness, sins, and sorrows, and illumines the soul to a great extent.
The ritual endows with tranquillity, compassion, forgiveness, truthfulness, candour, abstention from injury, abstinence from pride, renunciation, modesty, and abstinence from work. By attaining all these qualities, one can understand the path of spiritual realisation. For those who haven’t the knowledge of the Vedas, the energies of Lord Kapila instill Bhakti Marga or the path of devotion which will lead to oneness with Narayana, and also free a person from the world of Maya.
Lord Dattatreya is a combined incarnation of creator, preserver, and destroyer. He is an embodiment of the trinity gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. He was born to Sage Atri (who was given a boon by supreme consciousness that he will take birth as his son) and Anusuya. Lord Dattatreya is portrayed with three faces to represent Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. He has six hands, four dogs symbolizing four Vedas, and a conch representing the eternal mantra ‘OM’. The Ramayana and Mahabharata, have some early references to him. The Dattatreya Upanishad, which belongs to Atharva Veda refers to him as taking the form of a child, a lunatic, and even a demon to help his followers attain moksha or salvation from the material world. He is the ultimate guru or teacher who protects from evil and gives supreme knowledge. The Lord is known for his kindness and love.
Lord Dattatreya Homam invokes the lord who bestows miracles to solve all life problems and fulfill marital desires. It's said that he created the Soma plant and was responsible for certain magical rites. Divine learning and enlightenment made Lord Dattatreya so pure that nothing impure can blemish the lord. Lord Dattatreya transcends the three qualities or gunas that his heads represent. He symbolizes love, compassion, and peace.
