According to Bhagavata Purana, Lord Dhanvantari, is the 12th avatar of Lord Vishnu who emerged with a pot of nectar during the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons. He is the physician of the gods and also the father of Ayurveda. He simplified Brahma’s Ayurveda into smaller divisions of eight for better understanding. These are Shalya, Bhutavidya, Shalakya, Rasayanatantra, Agadatantra, Kayachikitsa, Kaumarabhrtya and Vajikaranatantra. He also began teaching within the framework of Agama which means authoritative scripture, Pratyaksa or perception, Anumana or inference and Upamana or analogy. Lord Dhanvantari holds the nectar of immortality in his hand and can give immediate relief to illnesses and diseases. He also nurses one back to strength, vitality and ensures that you have a long life free of ailments.
Vedicfolks will perform Special Dhanvantari Homam with 108 herbs on the propitious day of Dhanvantari Jayanthi, the day the lord manifested from the ocean while it was being churned by the gods and demons for the immortal nectar.

The Srirangam Temple is one of the most significant self-manifested holy abodes of Lord Vishnu.
