Lord Balarama is the eight avatar of lord Vishnu. It is said that in Treta Yuga, Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Rama was an incarnation of Sheshnag on which Lord Vishnu rests and in Dwapar Yuga, Balarama is considered the incarnation of the serpent who is also the elder brother of Sri Krishna. Lord Balarama embodies strength, victory, knowledge, courage and protection. He destroys dosha of not only planets like Mercury but also serpents curse, Rahu-Ketu dosha and curse of maternal uncles. Lord Balarama also helps in preventing potential threats to a person’s life.
While Balarama is mostly recognized as an avatar of Lord Vishnu by the southern tradition, Lord Buddha is worshipped as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. In some scriptures, the appearance of Lord Krishna as an avatar has not been mentioned as it is believed that he is the original form of Vishnu.
An anecdote in Agni Purana, Chapter 16 says that the purpose of Maha Vishnu taking the form of Buddha was to convert every asura to Buddhism. When priesthood became arrogant and priests used rituals to harass and exploit animals and people, Lord Vishnu is said to have taken the incarnation of Buddha, at the beginning of Kali Yuga, to purify religious practices of extreme ritualism.
According to verses from the Brahmanda Purana,
Mohanartham Danavanam Balarupi Pathisthitah
Putram Tam Kalpayamasa Mudhabudhirjinah Svayam
Tatah Sammohayamasa Jinadyana Suramsakan
Bhagavan Vagbhirugrabhirahimsa Vacibhirharih ||
Which means that in order to delude demons, Lord Buddha was present in the form of a child on the way while the fool a jina (demon) imagined the child to be his son. The form expertly deceived Jina and other demons by his strong words of non-violence. It is said in the Lankavatara-Sutra that Ravana prays to Jina’s son, the ancient Lord Buddha and to all Buddha’s and their sons who would appear in the future. Therefore, the Buddha avatar mentioned in the ancient puranas and the one that appeared much later – Gautama Buddha, are not the same.
Various other Puranas such as Bhavishya, Linga, Varaha, Agni, Vayu, Skanda, Vishnu and Jaya Deva’s Gita Govinda have references to the appearance of the Buddha avatar of Lord Vishnu. In Vishnu Purana, Chapters 17 and 18, Lord Buddha is referred to as Mayamoha.
