The Thiruvannamalai Sri Arunachaleswarar temple is the divine spot where Lord Shiva appeared as a column of light to prove his might before Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. The temple is therefore considered as Agni sthalam or the shrine that symbolizes the fire aspect of the five elements of nature. The presiding deity of Tiruvannamalai Temple is Lord Arunachaleswarar or Lord Shiva in His linga form. It is believed that Lord Surya (Sun), Lord Chandra (Moon), Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Arunachaleswarar in this temple. It is also the abode of Goddess Unnamlai Amman, the consort of the main deity, the benevolent Mother Shakti form. Worshipping the two forms removes adverse effects of souls of last birth. The main lord is encompassed by Ashta Lingams called Indra Lingam which faces East, Agni Lingam (South East), Yama Lingam (South), Niruthi Lingam (South West), Varuna Lingam (West), Vayu Lingam (North West) , Kubrea Lingam (North) and Isana Lingam (North East).
In the month of Karthigai, the Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara Swamy temple is all set for the Karthigai Maha Deepam, also known as Karthigai Pournami because it is observed on the full moon day which coincides with Karthik star. At the hill top in Tiruvannamalai, the abode of Lord Shiva, which is the ‘agni sthalam’, or representing the fire element, a special light is lit on the day called Tiruvannamalai Deepam which brings people closer to the energies of the lord.

Lord Dattatreya is a combined incarnation of creator, preserver and destroyer. He is an embodiment of the trinity gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He was born to Sage Atri (who was given a boon by the supreme consciousness that He will take birth as his son) and Anusuya. Lord Dattatreya is portrayed with three faces to represent Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He has six hands, four dogs symbolizing four Vedas, a conch representing the eternal mantra ‘OM’. The Ramayana and Mahabharata, have some early references of him. The Dattatreya Upanishad, which belongs to Atharva Veda refers him as taking the form of a child, a lunatic and even a demon to help his followers attain moksha or salvation from the material world. He is the ultimate guru or teacher who protects from evil and gives supreme knowledge. The lord is known for his kindness and love.
