The Lalitha Sahasranamam is the 36th chapter of Lalitopakyana in Brahmanada Purana. This ultimate sacred hymn describes the 1000 glorious names of Sri Lalitha, the divine mother who is none other than Goddess Shakti. She is also known as Tripura Sundari and Shodashi. She personifies sixteen types of desires and her mantra consists of the same number of syllables.

Goddess Lalitha is the third of the Mahavidya goddesses, a symbol of purity and wholesomeness. She is beautiful, having a perfect structure and is the consort of Lord Kameshvara, an aspect of Lord Shiva. She exists in an eternal state of perfect harmony, always benevolent and her eyes are moist with compassion for all living beings on earth. She is a combination of knowledge, grace and determination and dissipates pleasure, sympathy and awareness to Her worshippers.

There are three forms of Goddess Lalitha namely, Tripura Bala, Tripura Sundari and Tripura Bhairavi that are representations of body, mind and consciousness respectively. Tripura Bala is a young virgin goddess, Tripura Sundari is a deity of eternal beauty and Tripura Bhairavi is the ferocity and power of Goddess Lalitha.

Many bizarre stories have been told about the goddess and in this temple devotees offer anklets to fulfill their vows.
