Lord Kedarnath, the Sadashiva Form that Gives What You Seek

Kedarnath Jyotirlinga is situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India, and is the highest among all the Jyotirlingas. The name Kedarnath is derived from two Sanskrit words, Kedar which means field, and Nath means lord. The Vedic literature Kashi Kedar Mahatmya states that the crop of liberation grows here abundantly and hence the name Kedarnath. Chapter 17 of Krishna Janma Khanda of Brahmavaivarta Purana states that the name Kedar also refers to a famous King Kedar from the Satya Yuga who renunciates his kingdom and performed Tapasya in the Himalayas. It's also believed that Lord Shiva agreed to dwell here on the request of Nara and Narayana – the twin brother incarnations of Lord Vishnu – for the welfare of devotees.

It's said that the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s help to liberate them from the sins committed during the Mahabharata war. But the lord was not ready to relieve them and disguised himself as himself in Guptkashi. But knowing the Pandavas were chasing Him, Lord Shiva disguised as a huge bull with its hump visible at Kedarnath, the forelegs appeared in Tunganath, the face in Rudranath, and the belly in Madya Maheshwar and head in Kalpeshwar. These holy spots are collectively known as Panch Kedar.

Originally built by the Pandavas, the Kedarnath Temple was glorified by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. A person accrues plenty of good karma by visiting the temple and the lord blesses devotees generously, and gives what they seek. It is believed that Lord Narayana performed Sahasranama puja to Lord Shiva at Kedarnath. The Shiva Lingam in the sanctum is conical-shaped and worshipped as the Sadashiva form of Lord Shiva. This is considered a unique feature compared to all other Shiva shrines.

Lord Kedarnath Homam will be performed on Pradosham Kaala which coincides with Midhuna Sankranti. Pradosha Kaala is an auspicious time – the evening of Trayodasi tithi (13th moon day) between 4. 30 PM and 6 PM. It is observed once in fifteen moon days. The time is dedicated to Lord Shiva whose energies are very close to the earth and gives blessings to those who worship him with devotion and piety.

Midhuna Sankranti or Mithuna Sankramanam is the day when the Sun transits from Taurus sign to Gemini. It is celebrated as Asharh in Eastern India, Aani in the South and Midhunam in Kerala. People worship the gods for a good harvest after the rain. Ceremonies on the day pleases the Sun which ensures prosperity, peace and happiness in life.
