Sacred Kamadhenu is the mother of all cows. She provides everything that is desired and is considered the guardian of the eleven Rudras. Her very name suggests that she gives plenty. ‘Kama’ means desire or wish and ‘Dhenu’ suggests giver. Kamadhenu symbolises abundance and generosity because she grants all wishes of her devotees. She emerged from the ‘kshirasagar’ or ocean of milk at the time of the great churning by the gods and demons.
Every body part of the divine Kamadhenu has a religious implication. Its four legs represent the four Vedas and the great Himalayas. Its teats symbolise four Purusharthas (Dharma, Kama, Artha and Moksha). Its face symbolises the sun and the moon, and its shoulders Agni, and its horns represent the trinities.
According to Puranas, Lord Shiva’s most valuable gifts to humans are Kamadhenu and Kalpataru — a wish-fulfilling cow and tree, respectively. Once, the holy animal asked the lord to liberate her from her duties. Lord Shiva promised to do so in her next birth and said that she would be born as an ordinary cow and he would personally liberate her.
In ancient mythology, Lord Kubera, meaning deformed, is the god of wealth and is worshipped akin to Goddess Lakshmi, who is also the deity of affluence. He is the king of Yakshas and not only distributes wealth but also maintains it, therefore he is the guardian of wealth.
