When the gods and demons churned the mighty ocean for the immortal nectar a beautiful nymph appeared from the ocean who was none other than Lord Vishnu in a female avatar. This is the only female manifestation of Lord Vishnu, an enchantress who helped the gods retain their immortality. In some regions of the north, Mohini is portrayed as Mahalasa, the consort of Khandoba (Martanda Bhairava), a regional form of Lord Shiva.
Mohini is the sattva soul in the female body that represents the material aspects of reality, goodness, harmony, positivity, beauty, and high virtue. Worshipping this unique form helps to get rid of sins from previous births, destroys evil forces, removes diseases, and grants long life and moksha. The Mohini Ekadashi is an important observance dedicated to the Mohini Avatar of Lord Vishnu.
