Garuda is the carrier and a great follower of Lord Vishnu. Known as Periya Thiruvadi or Vedatma, Garuda’s independent position as a deity is well-known. He is seen circling the sky above whenever consecrations or divine ceremonies take place in temples. Garuda rescued Rama’s army from a poisonous Naga weapon used by Indrajit, son of Ravana. The powerful bird is the embodiment of the Vedas, and is prominently eulogized in the Puranas for immense knowledge, power and strength.

Invoking Garuda removes all types of suffering and evil that are harmful, removes fear of snakes and other venomous creatures. According to Garuda Purana, when one is embarking on a journey, Garuda will serve the devotee as a travel guardian and safeguard the person till the end.

The Garuda Purana describes Garuda Mrtyu Raksa Mantra which, as the name suggests, is a powerful mantra to save a person from the clutches of death. The mantra can be used to remove every poison in the system and restore health.

This is how the mantra works:

In the first step, the lagna is strengthened with the mantra. This is done to establish the omkara on the ascendant in the horoscope. This helps to keep all evil energies or forces under check and now the second mantra is chanted to protect the soul. The mantra is altered according to a person’s chara atmakaraka. For e.g., if sun is the atmakaraka, the mantra reads as ‘Om Ju Hamsah Suryaya Namah’.

Apart from the sun, seven other deities have been mentioned in the Garuda Purana that can be invoked for the purpose of overcoming death. These deities who rule a particular planet are Shiva, Krishna, Ganesh, Brahma, Chandika, Saraswati and Lakshmi.

It is very important to note that correct mantra should be chosen for the planet which is chara atmakaraka.

Garuda Mrtyu Raksa Homam will be performed on the most propitious day, Vaikunta Ekadasi. The significance of this day can be traced to the Padma Purana which says that Lord Vishnu took the form of Ekadasi, a female energy, to kill Muran, a demon, in the month of Margazhi, (December-January). Impressed by the act of the goddess, Lord Vishnu declares that whoever worships him on this day will reach Vaikunta or heaven. The day provides an opportunity for purifying one’s soul by removing all the bad Karma and starting a new life full of promises, peace and prosperity.

Vaikunta Perumal Temple is located at Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, India. One of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the main deity is worshipped as Vaikuntanathan or Lord Paramapadanathan and his consort Lakshmi as Vaikuntavalli Thayar. The temple of Vaikunta Perumal has spectacular architecture and is under the care of Archeological Survey of India.
