Lord Somnath, a Lord Shiva form, is enshrined inside a temple in Gujarat on the western coast of India. The temple has an infinite symbol of Lord Shiva in a lingam form that has neither a beginning nor an end. Therefore, Somnath is also one the 12 Jyotirlinga temples of the country.

The name Somnath means, the one who protects the moon. The temple and the lingam is believed to have been built by the moon god himself. Somanathaswami Temple is situated at Needur, Myiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of the temple is called Arul Somanatha Swamy/ Karkadeswarar or Bhadrakaleeswarar whose consort is Veyuru Tholiyammai or Adhigandhi Ammai or Aalala Sundari or Vedanayagi. The temple is one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the ancient Thevaram hymns of Tamil Saivite saints. According to ancient literature, Lord Chandra or Soma excavated a tank called ‘Chandra Theertham’ to get relief from his ill health. He bathed in the tank, worshipped Lord Shiva and was finally relieved of his illness. Hence Lord Shiva came to be known as Somanathar. It is said Goddess Kali also visited this place from Kedarnath and Kasi, and Lord Shiva made Kali (Aalala Sundari) responsible for the safety of the people of the village. People perform special pujas, ‘abhishekam’ and offer vastra or cloth to the lord and the mother.
