According to Shiva Purana, Goddess Bhavani, is the supreme goddess and a consort of Sadashiva, who is a supreme absolute being. The goddess is a violent incarnation of Adi Shakti. She is also known as Tulaja, Tvarita, Amba, Jagadamba, or ‘karunaswaroopini’, the one filled with mercy. Maratha Emperor Shivaji was her great devotee and a temple in Maharashtra called Tuljapur Bhavani Temple is dedicated to the goddess. As per historical records, Goddess Bhavani had given a sword to the emperor called ‘Bhavani Kadga’, for winning over his opponents during war. Worshipping Goddess Bhavani on the day of Shivaji Jayanthi, the day that commemorates the birth of the emperor, is propitious as it shields devotes from sins of envy, evil desires, hatred, fury and ego.
