Goddess Bhagavathi Amman is none other than Mother Shakti or Durga. She is worshipped as Bhagavathi in temples of Kerala and some regions of Karnataka in India. The goddess, a powerful deity to destroys evils, removes all negative effects of planets, black magic and health issues. Bhagavathi Amman Homam is a special ritual that is accomplished by placing a lamp in the centre of a mandala. The Mother is invoked in the form of Maha kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati.
In many part of Kerala, this ritual is also called Bhagavati Seva Puja, and we at Vedicfolks endeavor to perform a homam in a similar manner.
Before the start of the ritual, the priest cleanses himself and wears clean clothes. The doctrines of tantra are observed which involves mantras, meditation, yoga, puja and homam. The priest draws Sri Chakra Padmam (lotus pattern) with five natural colour powders like turmeric, rice, charcoal, etc. It is the seat of the Goddess, and is a symbolic representation of the Universe. The five colours represent the five elements namely earth, water, fire, air and ether. On this Sri Chakra, the main lamp is placed with its five sides lit and decorated with flowers. Two other lamps on either side of the main lamp are placed on intrinsic patterns or ‘kolams’. One is for Lord Ganesh and the other for Goddess Kamakshi.
Our experienced priests first pay obeisance to Lord Ganesh, who is the Lord of Obstacles. He grants wisdom and good fortune to those who worship him. Goddess Shanthi Durga Parameswari is ushered in and seated on the lotus pattern. Goddess Kamakshi is also invoked with prayers, mantras and hymns. Bhagavathi Amman Homam pleases the benevolent and kind goddess immensely and she blesses the devotees generously. Once the ceremonies are completed it is believed that the goddess returns to her abode.
Bhagavathi Amman Homam will be performed on Chandra Darshana in the month of Magha, during Dwitiya tithi, which has great religious significance. It’s the first day of moon sighting after the New Moon day and the sighting blesses with success and good fortune. Also, Goddess Adi Shakti is highly connected with the moon and its energies and invoking the deity on this day helps to overcome sufferings and misfortune in life and uplift consciousness and psyche to a great extent.
Bhagavathi Amman Homam blesses devotees and their families with longevity, health, wealth and happiness. The ritual can be performed for specific desires like overcoming enemies, removing possessed spirits like ghosts and other evil energies, having children, obtaining riches, etc. It also earns the blessings of Tri Shakti forms – Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati.
Bhagavathi Amman Homam removes any obstacles, difficulties and evil influences in a person’s life. It also ends negativity and qualities like ego, jealousy, hatred, anger, etc. it also has the capacity to bestow relief from miseries, planetary afflictions especially that of Moon, Mars, Rahu and Venus. People who are under a magic spell or enchantment (vasheekaranam) can find relief from this homam. It restores balance and peace in life. The ritual fulfills desires and the mother when pleased, ensures longevity, robust health, success in all undertakings, and happiness. Performing the powerful homam fulfills dreams of good progeny, happy marriage, material wealth and luxuries. It enhances positivity that leads to spiritual upliftment and harmony.
Bhagavathi Vilakku (Lamp) Puja is performed to a lamp which symbolizes the Mother Durga or any of her forms. Not one, but three lamps are lit to for Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga and the third for Goddess Lakshmi or Saraswati or any other form of Adi Shakti. An intricate pattern is drawn on the floor called ‘padmam’ on which the main lamp is placed, the other two lamps are placed on either sides. The Puja begins with lighting of the lamps. Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga and Goddess Saraswati are invoked in the lamps. Also the priest offers a delicious Prasad called Nei Payasam made of rice, ghee and jaggery.
