Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is one of the oldest jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The self-manifested symbol of the lord appeared when a woodcutter was cutting a tree and the ground underneath it bled. He panicked and called the villagers who brought a cow which drained some of the milk on the bleeding ground. The bleeding stopped and a glowing Linga sprung up from the place.
Located in the Sahyadri hills in the state of Maharashtra, the temple is found on the banks of the river Bhima also called Chandrabhaga. It’s believed that after Lord Shiva annihilated a demon called Tripurasura, who was causing havoc in heaven, he was resting in the forest, he perspired profusely and the lord’s sweat flowed like a stream of water which later became River Bhima. The saints and the people asked the lord to remain in the area as the lord agreed to protect the people in the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga form. The gods invoked Goddess Parvati with lotus flowers and came to be known as Kamalja Mata. She also joined her consort and manifested in Ardhanari form.
Ancient scriptures like Shivleelamrut, Sri Guru Charitra and Strotra Ratnakar, have referred to Lord Bhimashankar as a woman because he manifested from Mother Earth.
Tucked away in a beautiful locale, the temple was built by sculptors who belong to the Vishwakarma clan, and the intricate designs on the walls and stucco images all around the temple speak volumes of the marvelous architecture.

The ancient Bheemeswarar temple is located in Valarpuram in Tiruvallur district. This small temple has no Prahara. The temple is associated with Mahabharata and it’s said that Bheema of the Pancha Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva in the temple and from then He was called Bheemeshwara – the Lord of Bheema. His consort is Goddess Maragathavalli. Even some villages around the area have the names of the characters of Mahabharata. The other gods of the temple are Lord Ganesh, Sri Valli, Devasena, Subramanya, Chandikeswarar, and Lord Surya. Special ceremonies like ‘Oru Kaala’ poojas are conducted on Pradosham and Maha Shivaratri days. People offering pooja in this temple are relieved from diseases, get the comforts of life like purchasing vehicles and ample wealth, and gain knowledge and salvation.
A very powerful symbol of Lord Shiva, the lingam is a representation of the union of a primordial energy of the Shakti with the divine consciousness, Lord Shiva. It connotes a column of light that has no beginning or end.
