There Murugan asked Brahma how he created the universe. Brahma reverted that he created the universe with the help of Vedas. Murugan then asked Brahma to recite a few texts from Vedas; the latter began recitation with the word Om. Murugan interrupted and stopped Brahma and asked the meaning of Om. Lord Brahma got angry as he failed to explain the meaning to Murugan. The instance further infuriated Murugan how Lord Brahma could create a universe if he didn't know the meaning of the supreme Pranava mantra Om. He punched Brahma on his head and further sent him to prison and became the creator of the universe himself. All the devas got disturbed after the absence of Lord Brahma, and they ask mighty Vishnu to please Murugan and ask him to release Lord Brahma. But Lord Vishnu failed in doing so; then he went to Lord Shiva for help. The supreme Shiva went to Murugan and asked him the meaning of Om on which he was so disturbed. Murugan started explaining the Om’s meaning, and Lord Shiva started listening to him like a child filled with immense interest and curiosity. This incident led to the naming of Murugan as Swaminatha Swami or the teacher of Shiva.
