Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Omkareshwar, is the Lord of Omkaara or the Lord of "Om Sound". "Om" is not just a sound of vibration or symbol. It denotes an entire cosmic world, a mystic cosmic energy mediate through pure intension, raises your heart and soul to the supreme power Lord Omkareshwar. He is the base of all creations and all the beings of the universe. Om and Lord Omkareshwar has got a great spiritual importance offering great aesthetic power of supreme. The temple is located in an island on the banks of Naramada and Kaveri. In Ancient time, the temple was also called as "Mandhata" or Shivapuri" or Omkaraeshwar, denotes the river line island of Naramada river in Kandhawa District, Madhya Pradesh. The name "Om" is due to the shape of the island, has secured the name as "Omkareshwar". This temple happens to be in the midway between Amarkantak the feed of Narmada River and its final destination of Arabian Sea.
Legacy Of The Lord Omkareshwar
The spiritual word "Om" is said to be the divine root of the emergence of the Universe. Once Legend Vindya, the deity of Vindyachal mountain, created a sacred geometrical diagram with a Lingam made of sand and clay while worshipping Lord Shiva. The supreme Lord Shiva was so pleased with that worship, appeared in two forms. One is Lord Omkareshwar and other one is Lord Amaleswara and both has dedicated temple of worship in the island. It is dated 5500 years back, this island was inhabited as per ancient scriptures.
Another Legend "Ikshvaku" clan, the King Mandhata once ruling the island was an antecessors of Lord Rama, who made the whole island sparkling with gems. Out of curiosity, Lord Narada, an admirable celestial sage, raised his doubts with Lord Shiva about this awesome appearance of the island. Lord Shiva have replied him that Satyuga the island is blessed with Gem, Treta Yuga is blessed with mountain of gold, Dwapur Yuga will enrich with Copper and Kaliyuga will decline in the appearance and would be made of rock. King Mandhata worshipped Lord Shiva in this island until the Lord appeared as Jyotirlinga and King Mandhata has two sons by name Ambarish and Muchukunda, who did strict penance and austerities to please Lord Shiva and this island was named after the King as "Mandhata".
Another Legacy is that once there was a terrible war between Devas (gods) and Demons (Danavas), and demons kept winning the devas. It was a great dominance by demons and was stopping all efforts of devas to carry out their divine routines. Devas worshipped Lord Shiva to clear this demonic forces and was pleased by the prayers, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Lord Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and destroyed the demons "Danavas", restored truth of existence and dharma. This place of worship where Adi Sankaracharya, the philosopher and theologian met his guru Govindapada, in a cave and the cave is still in existence, even today.
