Immense knowledge and understanding of language made Avvaiyar a little arrogant. To teach her a lesson, Lord Murugan took the form of a ten-year-old cowboy. Once Avvaiyar was travelling through a forest, and she was extremely tired, so she decided to rest under a fruit tree for a while. When she was resting, the cowboy appeared and asked her if she wanted some fruit. Avvaiyar was tired and hungry, so she said yes to the boy with ecstasy. The boy further asked if she wanted roasted or unroasted fruits. This question put Avvaiyar in a dilemma as there is no such thing as roasted or unroasted fruit on a tree. But as Avvaiyar was tired and unable to argue or explain the cowboy, she asked for the unroasted one. The boy fetched some fruits, and when the fruits fell on the sand, they got covered with them. Avvaiyar took fruits and started blowing to remove sand. When she was doing so, the cowboy said that only roasted fruits are blown away because they are hot, unlike unroasted ones. This wordplay by the young boy left Avvaiyar astonished, and she asked him to reveal his identity. The boy hailed the Murugan avatar; Avvaiyar bowed down and apologised. Lord Murugan then blessed her with knowledge and immense proficiency.
