Who is Lord Kurma?

Sri Kurma Avatar is the second avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu in the Dasavatara, undertaken by the Lord in the Satya yuga. Sage Durvasa had given a precious garland to Indra, the king of Devas. Indra placed the garland around his elephant, but the animal trampled it, the sage felt insulted and enraged by this, and cursed the Devas to lose their immortality, strength, and divine powers. When the Devas approached Lord Vishnu for help, He advised that they drink the nectar of immortality ‘Amirtha’ to regain their glory. To obtain it, they needed to churn the ocean of milk, for churning this large volume of water they needed Mount Mandara as the churning staff, and the serpent Vasuki as the churning rope. While churning, Mount Mandara began to sink into the ocean of milk. Lord Vishnu took the form of the turtle Kurma, to stop the mountain from sinking and to provide stability as the Devas and Asuras churned the waters.
