Second Kala Puja

The Rudram Chamakam is the most potent of all prayers to worship Lord Shiva. The Sri Rudram is a hymn offered to the all-pervading Brahman, one of the trinities, and the ever powerful Rudra. His presence is felt in the smallest of being to the higher forms, from benign to terrible.

As the name reads, Sri Rudram originated from Krishna Yajur Veda in the Taithreeya Samhita. It consists of two parts the namakam has verses ending with nama and chamakam has verses ending with ‘cha may’. It asks for supreme fulfillments of humans desires. So, the namakam identifies Rudra with everything and chamakam lists out the blessing one receives from the Lord.

The power of rudram is such that a person who recites this highly blessed verses once becomes pure instantly and the place where he lives becomes free of diseases, thefts, illnesses and drought. It also leads to achieving worldly pleasures and liberation.

Third Kala Puja

Since Vedic times, the conch has found a special place in most events and rituals. It is a spiritual aid that radiates with the sound Om and represent life forms that have reached high spiritual levels by leading selfless lives. The conch or shank represents the power of Om. They reduce negative vibrations and give steadiness of the mind. It has spiritual potency to purify the body and mind. Offering sacred water on the linga with 108 such conches improves well-being, removes sorrows, fear and problems, grants wealth and long life, rids illnesses, blesses offspring, increases knowledge and frees from debts.

Fourth Kala Puja

Ekadasa means 11 and Eka Dasa Rudra are eleven forms of Rudra or Shiva. The highly powerful ritual invokes the 11 forms in agni or fire for getting various boons. Mahadeva, Shiva, Maha Rudra, Shankara, Neelaholita, Eshana Rudra, Vijaya Rudra, Bheema Rudra, Devadeva, Bhavodbhava, Adityatmaka Rudra are the eleven forms of Rudra. Their consorts are Dhee Devi, Dhritti Devi, Ushna (Rasala) Devi, Uma Devi, Neeyut Devi, Sarpi Devi, Eela Devi, Ambika Devi, Iravati Devi, Sudha Devi and Deeksha Devi.

The Ekadasa anuvakams consists of eleven sections of Namakam – with repeated use of the word namo – which invoke and worship the various names and attributes of Lord Shiva. The Ekadasa anuvakams of Chamakam comprises repeated use of the words ‘cha me’, which lists wishes of the devotee.

The homa comprises of two steps the namakam and chamakam. Lord Shiva is supreme consciousness who is eternal and all pervasive. He is called upon to favour the devotee and forget his anger. Ekambareshwar Temple in Kanchipuram is one of the pancha bhoota stalam of Lord Shiva that represents the earth element.
