Baba Dham or Baidyanath dham is a glorious jyotirlinga, as other twelve jyotirlingas, is located in Deoghar, in the Santhal Parganas constituency of the state of Jharkhand, in India. He is also called as Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga is located at Prajwalika Nidhanam which means, "Funeral Place, i.e. Chithabhoomi". This Baba Dham is said to be one of the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva in the form of Baidyanath Jyotirlinga as Lord Shiva himself is the deity of time, that is why we call him Mahakal, he is also a crematorium. He also carries the remaining ashes on his body after burning dead bodies. After death, the body becomes pure, there is no work, anger, greed, attachment, to it. It is believed that Lord Shiva attaches himself to the spirits by applying that sacred ash on his body.

Legacy Of Baidyanath Jyotirlinga

According to ancient mythological scriptures and Deep Text Shiva Purana, A great devotee of Lord Shiva, the great scholar Demon King Lanka Ravana did a severe penance to please Lord Shiva and requested a boon. In this boon, he had expressed his desire to carry Lord Shiva with him from Mount Kailash to Lanka, but Lord Shiva refused the desire to go to Lanka with the Demon King Lanka Ravana. Instead Lord Shiva advised Demon King Lanka Ravana to take with him the Shivalinga and also advised him not to keep this Shivalinga, anywhere on the earth. By mistake if it kept anywhere on the way, he said there is no power on the earth could lift that Shivalinga, then that place will become the Abode, was the message to Demon King Lanka Ravana.

Lord Vishnu on hearing this he was not supportive to this idea of taking the Shivalinga to Lanka by Demon King Lanka Ravana. He requested the Goddess Ganga to enter the stomach of King Lanka Ravana. After the arrival of Goddess Ganga into the stomach, he lost focus on his desire, arose a nature's call, to urinate. There arrived Lord Vishnu assumed in the form of Cowherd's man. King Lanka Ravana handed over the Shivalinga to the Cowherd's man and advised him that he shall come back in a moment and asking him to hold the Shivalinga until he is back and not to keep on the ground, anywhere. While King Lanka Ravana did not return back for a very long time, the cowherd's man felt that Shivalinga becoming heavier and stronger and he disappeared leaving the graceful Shivlinga on the ground. When King Lanka Ravana came back, despite of his terrible initiatives, he became very sad seeing the Shivalinga on the ground and returned back to Lanka without Shivlinga, as it was impossible for any power to lift it from that place. Demon King Lanka Ravana established the Shivalinga in this place. After this the Devas, Gods and Goddesses came to this place and consecrated this Shivlinga and worshipped, which is the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga.

"Poorvothare Prajwalika Nidhane

Sada Vasantham Girija Sametham

Surasuraradhitha Padapadmam

Srivaidyanatham Thamaham Namami"
