Skanda Sashti falls on the sixth day of bright fortnight in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October- November). The deity worshipped is Lord Subramanya or Skanda. The festival symbolises the destruction of evil by the son of Lord Shiva, Skanda.  The dramatic presentation of ‘soora samharam’ or the killing of demon is enacted in temples like Tiruchendur, Tiruttani etc, as hundreds of devotees watch the divine performance.

Lord Skanda manifested from the third eye of Lord Shiva to annihilate the demon Soorapadman. He is a warrior god with six faces and twelve arms, each carrying weapons, for he is the commander-in-chief of the great army of Devas and also a courageous defender of righteousness. He fought the demon for six days and finally vanquished him on the sixth day. Those who fast and worship the lord during the time are sure to receive His blessings. He is a great miracle healer, guides devotees to the path of enlightenment. He has got control over the chakras of will power, knowledge and offers his followers pure divine love. Worshipping the lord on Skanda Sashti ensures one win over adversaries, provides peace of mind and grants supreme happiness not only for you but also your loved ones.
