Vaishno Devi or Vaishnavi Devi is one of the Ashta Matrikas that emerged from the energies of Lord Vishnu for annihilating demon Andhakasura. In the hills of Trikuta, situated in Jammu region is the temple of Vaishno Devi, the most revered and sought-after goddess of the Kali Yuga. She emanated from the combined energies of goddesses Maha Kali, Saraswathi and Lakshmi. She was born in a south Indian family that followed the Vaishnava (followers of Lord Vishnu) tradition and hence was named Vaishnavi. Since birth, Vaishnavi was a great devotee of Lord Rama and wanted to marry him. But Lord Rama was married to Sita and would think of no other woman. So he asked her to wait for him until his next avatar as Kalki in Kali Yuga. To this day, the goddess is said to be waiting for her consort in the Trikuta Mountains performing strict penance with deep devotion.
Also, the three feminine powers that created Vaishno Devi using their satvic, tamasic and rajasic nature or gunas entrusted her the responsibility of upholding righteousness and demolishing evil.
