Goddess Sati is the daughter of King Daksha, have fallen in Love with Lord Shiva and willing to marry as she found him dedicated and lovable husband, married Lord Shiva.  Her father Daksha did not agree to it. Once King Daksha organized an Yagya did not invite both Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati. Lord Shiva did not want his wife Sati to attend the Yagya, as they were not been invited.  Goddess Sati ignored Lord Shiva's piece of advice, went to the ceremony alone. But she was insulted by her father to the extreme, ran into the Sacrificial fire and self-immolated.  Virabhadra and Bhadrakali the creations of Lord Shiva, beheaded Daksha and devasted yagnja shaala in the rampage. Later, Lord Shiva forgiven Daksha, brought back to life to complete the Yagya.

Lord Vishu pacified Lord Shiva, who was in deep grief, unable to bear the detachment, wandered with half-burned corpse of Goddess Sati. Lord Vishu helped Lord Shiva from this grief, cut the half-burned body parts into 51 pieces with his Sudarshana Chakra fell in the places where Lord Shiva visited, which came to be known as Shakti Peethas.
