Svacchanda Bhairava is an esoteric and terrifying form of Lord Shiva. He is the Agni or light aspect and his consort Aghoreshvari signifies vimarsha or self-awareness. This unique form has five faces with wide eyes, is adorned with serpents all over the body and wears a necklace of skulls. He has 18 arms with many weapons like noose, arrows, goad, a skull-topped staff, a damaru or drum, a bell, bow, trident, sword, shield, axe, etc., that prove his might and power. He wears lion skin as his robe, and on his shoulders he wraps himself with elephant hide. He is depicted standing upon Sadashiva and on his lap mother Aghoreswari is seated who is none other than goddess Parvati.
Lord Svacchanda Bhairava manifests out of his own free will and is the highest form of power – Shakti. He overflows with consciousness and bliss. He is endowed with three power tools or eneriges called Iccha Shakti, Jnana Shakti and Kriya Shakti. The lord uses these tools to manifest the universe with his five-fold acts – Shrishti (creation), Stithi (sustenance), Samhara (dissolution), Triodanha (concealing) and Anugrah (revealing).
This is a unique ritual to one of the Bhairava forms and Bhairavi called Aghoreshwari. Bhairava manifestations are very powerful and associated with annihilation and it’s believed that they punish those who commit sins. They protect from negative qualities like greed, lust and anger and therefore they protect women who may fall victim to physical abuse.
Worshipping Lord Svacchanda Bhairava liberates a person from bondage and dissolves differences. The rope in the lord’s hand signifies that he can subdue death or time (Kala). The ritual helps to eliminate the materialized bondage of maya and karma along with limited ego or Anava Mala*. Along with His consort Aghoreshwari, the lord removes non-duality among the souls and blesses the seeker to a higher orbit of self-awareness. This tantric god is said to enter the body of a pious sadhaka and bestows miracle powers. He grants victorious powers called awareness, cognition, bliss, will and action. Svacchchanda Bhairava and Aghoreshwari Homam delights the devotees as they bestow bliss, purifies heart, boons of wealth and prosperity to the world.
*Anava Mala is one of malas or impurities which are aspects of consciousness that veils a yogi from experiencing his true self which are results of maya or illusion.
The Bhairava Moorthy temple is located in Tiruchengode in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. The main deity of the temple popularly called as South Kashi, is Lord Bhairava. A powerful demon Andagan who wreaked havoc in heaven was destroyed by Lord Bhairava, a fierce form created by Lord Shiva. Bhairava Moorthy destroys the ego, and tough evil like enemies and other negative energies. During Ashtami tithi people flock to this temple in large numbers to find a solution to their numerous problems. Lord Kala Bhairava appears in this temple with his beloved vehicle Sarameyan, which is an immortal male dog mentioned in the Rid Veda. A puja to this powerful god gives relief to ailments such as diabetes, overcomes fear of death, and gives progeny blessings, business growth, and fulfillment of wishes.
