Lord Shiva is the highest manifestation of Absolute Reality. He also represents purity and auspiciousness (Shivam). He is Brahman – Maheshwara and lord of the universe – Ishwara. According to Krishna Yajur Veda and Pancha Brahma Upanishad, the supreme truth or consciousness took form in five stages called Sadyojata, Aghora, Vamadeva, Tatpurusha and Ishana to perform five functions. Here brahma does not mean Lord Brahma, the creator, but it means Lord Shiva, the Supreme Brahman.
The five faces of Lord Shiva therefore represent the five functions mentioned above called Panchakrityas. These five faces correspond to five syllables in the divine penta-syllabic or panchakshara mantra called na-mah-shi-va-ya.

This day also coincides with Damodara Dwadashi which is celebrated on the Shukla paksha of Shravan month dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Shravan Nakshatra stars appear bright in the sky during this time, and people also worship Lord Shiva for bringing happiness and other great benefits to the devotees.
According to the Agamas, Lord Satyojata is white in color, a youth with a charming face. His body is smeared with sandalwood paste, adorned with white flowers and his mudras or hand gestures display boon-granting Varada mudra and also fear-not or protection gesture for Abhaya mudra. Lord Sadyojata faces west and represent the element fire. The name Sadyojata represents Sadyaha which means born now. The lord manifests and makes his appearance known through newborn souls. This aspect is worshipped first and is associated with the color white. This form signifies the western direction and represents our will power. It also denotes the mind, tastes, power of creation and pleasures of life. Also, this aspect of Shiva makes his presence felt through the innumerable souls born.
