Pancha Brahma – Five Supreme Forms of Lord Shiva that Perform Five Main Functions

Lord Shiva is the highest manifestation of Absolute Reality. He also represents purity and auspiciousness (Shivam). He is Brahman – Maheshwara and lord of the universe – Ishwara. According to Krishna Yajur Veda and Pancha Brahma Upanishad, the supreme truth or consciousness took form in five stages called Sadyojata, Aghora, Vamadeva, Tatpurusha and Ishana to perform five functions. Here brahma does not mean Lord Brahma, the creator, but it means Lord Shiva, the Supreme Brahman.

  • Creation or Srishti – He creates all the worlds and beings, manifests himself as pure consciousness in the bodies and in the materiality of all existence.
  • Preservation or Sthithi – as a preserver, Lord Shiva is responsible for continuation of existence of all worlds and beings. He sustains power of breadth – Praneswara and the digestive power of fire – Jatharagni. He is source of nourishment such as food or water for all living beings.
  • Concealment or Tirobhava – Lord Shiva conceals the world by creating a net of delusion or Maya so that the order or consistency of the worlds are not disrupted. Because of this great Maya Shakti, he makes sure that he remains hidden and keeps living beings suppressed in order to maintain order and stability in the world.
  • Revelation or Anugraha – Lord Shiva is responsible for liberation of beings. According to Shaivism school of thought, good karma and individual effort are significant, but it’s impossible to achieve moksha without the grace of Lord Shiva.
  • Destruction, or Samhara – Once the creation comes to an end, Shiva withdraws the universe into himself and takes a sabbatical. After this, a new life and rebirth of living beings begin.

The five faces of Lord Shiva therefore represent the five functions mentioned above called Panchakrityas. These five faces correspond to five syllables in the divine penta-syllabic or panchakshara mantra called na-mah-shi-va-ya.

Vedicfolks takes pride in venerating the Pancha Brahma forms of Lord Shiva by performing unique and unprecedented rituals to the Supreme Reality. For the first of the five Pancha Brahma series of Homam, Satyojata Ishvara Homam will be performed at our homa centre on the day of Pradosh vrat. This day also coincides with Damodara Dwadashi which is celebrated on the Shukla paksha of Shravan month dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Shravan Nakshatra stars appear bright in the sky during this time, and people also worship Lord Shiva for bringing happiness and other great benefits to the devotees.

Lord Sadyojata Signifies Mind, Taste, Power of Creation and Will Power

According to the Agamas, Lord Satyojata is white in color, a youth with a charming face. His body is smeared with sandalwood paste, adorned with white flowers and his mudras or hand gestures display boon-granting Varada mudra and also fear-not or protection gesture for Abhaya mudra. Lord Sadyojata faces west and represent the element fire. The name Sadyojata represents Sadyaha which means born now. The lord manifests and makes his appearance known through newborn souls. This aspect is worshipped first and is associated with the color white. This form signifies the western direction and represents our will power. It also denotes the mind, tastes, power of creation and pleasures of life. Also, this aspect of Shiva makes his presence felt through the innumerable souls born.
