Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu manifested to avenge the Kshatriyas who were tormenting the Brahmans. Lord Parashurama is said to be a devoted disciple of Lord Shiva and learnt all the artillery skills from Him. Parashu means axe and hence Rama with an axe came to be known as Parashurama. Lord Shiva had gifted the axe to Lord Parashurama. It is said that Lord Parashurama exists on earth till date, and therefore called a Cheeranjivi which means one who lives forever. This is the only avatar of Lord Vishnu that co-existed during the times of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna (some of the other incarnations of Lord Maha Vishnu). Vedic texts describe the other qualities of Lord Parashuram as Kshatratej (courage and aggression) and Brahmatej (serenity and foresight).
Lord Parashurama Avatar Homam will be performed on Vaishnavaya Aja Ekadashi, an extremely spiritual day that emphasizes the control over the needs of one’s body, emotions and hunger. A person who fasts on this day can get blessings of purification of the soul in order to attain salvation.
