Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is a powerful spiritual destination which is situated on an island called Mandhata, which is surrounded by River Narmada. Of all the Jyotirlinga temples, the Omkareshwar has greater significance because of the River Narmada. Nowhere does a river split and re-joins except in this shrine as a mark of respect. The river bows down to the lord who purifies the mind and soul quickly.
Situated on Shivpuri Island in the heart of Madhya Pradesh in India, the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga derived its name because the island and the river are shaped in the form of an ‘Om’ mantra. Om is the sonic representation of the supreme being and also the essence of supreme consciousness. The linga is self-manifested and therefore considered sacred. Also, the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is divided into two temples that house Lord Omkareshwar and Lord Amareshwar, both Shiva forms.
It is believed that Lord Shiva mentioned the Omkareshwar Linga in Chapter 73 of Kashi Kanda. The temple is the abode of Supreme Brahman Parameshwar and no other place has such a fine merit. He resides in the form of Omkar in five forms symbolic of Akaar, Ukaar, Makaar, Naad, and Bindu.
Adi Shankaracharya describes the Jyotirlinga as follows:-
Kaverikanarmadayoh Pavitre Samagame Sajjanataranaya |
Sadaiva Mandhatripure Vasantamonkaramisham Shivamekamide ||
Meaning: I pay my obeisance to the One Who is the savior of the good people and the great One Who always resides at the Holy merging point of Kaveri and Narmada, i.e., Omkar Shiva.
According to the scriptures, worshipping Lord Omkareshwar vanishes all sins of the human being. Since the lord is eternal and will continue to exist till the end of time, one must worship the deity with utmost devotion. It is also believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati visit the temple at night time and therefore Sayan Arti and Ratri Puja are held every day. Also, it is believed that a person who worships the lord will derive the benefits of performing the king of yagnas, Ashwa Medha Yagna. It is also equal to reciting one lakh Rudra Japam and worshipping all the Shiva lingams in the world.

Ekambareshwar Temple in Kanchipuram is one of the Pancha Bhoota sthalam of Lord Shiva that represents the Earth element. According to Vedic texts, Goddess Parvati (Kamakshi) made a linga of sand – Prithvi - lingam and worshipped it under a mango tree. To test the goddess’ devotion, Lord Shiva created a flood that threatened to destroy the linga but Parvati embraced it and saved it from destruction. Lord Shiva is also called Tazhuva Kuzhainthaar which means the one who melted in the embrace. A puja in this temple helps to gain knowledge, cure for diseases, and acquire comforts of life, wealth and salvation.
Shiva yantra is an intricate amalgamation of certain symbols and curves embossed on it. It has the representation of five elements of nature which also a part of human body. There’s also a symbolic representation of Goddess Parvati in the Yantra. The Yantra keeps you charged with energy, gives strength, power and overcomes fear.
