Kalashtami is dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairava and is observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi the eighth day after full moon. It is very auspicious to devote the day to Lord Kala Bhairava. Devotees fast on the day and perform pujas and ritual to satiate the God of Time. There are about 12 Kalashtami observances in a year. Devoting the day to Lord Kala Bhairava will fetch the devotee prosperity and happiness and grant success in life.
‘Bhai’ assures wealth in material life, ‘ra’ prevents negative vibrations and limited consciousness and ‘va’ is for creation of things continuously. Mahakala Bhairava is the Lord of Time and worshipping him on Kalashtami favours you with good time, removes sufferings, pain, sins and negative influences.
Kalabhairava – This magnificent form is a manifestation of Lord Shiva who oversees the march of time. The word Bhairava originated from the word ‘Bhiru’ which means frightful. Though he presents himself in a terrible form, he is actually protecting his devotees from all negative forces. Once, the three gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva had an argument as to who is the most supreme. It was Brahma’s turn to speak, and what he said infuriated Lord Shiva. He cut a small portion of his nail and transforms it to Kalabhairava. This form cut off the head of Lord Brahma and that’s why the Lord is seen with a lot of weapons in the hand. However, Kala Bhairava had to pay for his deeds. He roamed the entire world as a beggar (Kapali) with the skull of Brahma as his begging bowl. The sin got finally absolved when he reached Varanasi.

The Durga suktam is a very powerful prayer found in the Mahanarayana Upanishad of the Krishna Yajur Veda. It highlights the role of Agni who ferries people across the ocean of darkness towards enlightenment or mukti. The fire god Agni represents Kriya Shakti and so does the goddess Durga whose form signifies Kriya Shakti.
Durga Suktam glorifies Agni, the god of fire asking him for protection from difficulties and other hurdles in life. It also reveres Goddess Durga who is the color of fire and blazes with religious austerity. She escorts the devotees through their trying times and evolves from fire. The Suktam pleads with Agni to grant abundance, happiness of children and descendants. It ensures well-being of all creatures. Agni is invincible and remains undefeated by enemies, evil, sins and takes everyone beyond all that is transient. Durga Suktam puja besotws good fortune, abundance and prosperity with the blessings of Mother and fire god.
