Among the 18 Puranas of Vedic literature, the Brahmananda Purana is famous for singing the glories of the Supreme Mother Sri Lalitha. It describes that she appeared to save the world from the clutches of the demon Bhandasura. It has three sub-texts namely Lalitopakhyana consisting of 45 chapters, Lalitha Sahasranama which consists of 320 verses in three chapters and the third text is Lalitha Trishati which features the 300 names of the goddess. It is also known as Sarva Poorthikari Stotram which means that it is a hymn that gives fullness of everything. A well-known Bashyam or commentary on this work is attributed to Sri Adi Shankaracharya.
Lalitha Trishati details the 300 names of the goddess. Twenty of these names each start from each of the 15 letters which form the Panchadasakshari mantra – the 15-letter powerful mantra of Goddess Lalitha for ‘upasana’. It was revealed to saint Agastya by Lord Hayagriva (a Lord Vishnu avatar and the God of knowledge) at the behest of the Goddess Herself. Hayagriva also informed Agastya that Lalitha Trishati is the secret of all secret hymns dedicated to the goddess and that it is not in the form of ‘namas’ but in the form of mantras. The omnipotent Sree Chakra is also worshipped along with the divine verses.
Of the 300 names of the goddess, twenty names each start from each of the Panchadasakshari mantras. The first five letters given in the first line originate from the Mooladhara which is supposed to be the baser instincts of man. This then touches the Anahatha Chakra which is the basis for food. The second six letters start from Anahatha with the power of brilliance of the sun touching the Ajna chakra – the wheel of command. The last four letters originate from the Ajna chakra like the soothing light of billions of moons to reach the centre of the forehead called the Lalata Madhya – the Sahasrara, where the closed bud of the lotus with thousand petals opens. It is said that once this lotus opens, there can't be any knowledge in earth and heaven that is unknown.
Vedicfolks will perform Lalitha Trishati Homam to commemorate the greatest saint of all times, Sri Adi Shankaracharya on his birth anniversary which is observed as Shanakaracharya Jayanthi. It also coincides with the birth anniversary of another important exponent of Vaishnava tradition, Sri Ramanujacharya. In his honour, an auspicious puja, Sharanagati and Vaikunta Gadyam Puja and Sri Rangam temple puja will be performed.
The most powerful Lalitha Trishati Homam is believed to offer great benefits to the ‘sadhaka’. It bestows all that is needed in life. The mantras are divine gifts from heaven that sing praises of Goddess Lalitha which was revealed by Lord Hayagriva.
