Why Lakshmi Kubera Homam on Diwali?

Diwali is one of the most glorious festivals of the Hindu people. They celebrate Diwali for five days in most regions of India. When Diwali falls, the sky is filled with lights from firecrackers. These lights signify the triumph of good over evil.

Hindus celebrate the first day of Diwali as ‘Dhanteras’ or ‘Dhantrayodashi’. ‘Dhan’ means ‘wealth’ and trayodashi means ‘13th day’. This year, Diwali will fall on 29th October.

Here are quotes from great Stotras (verses) which support Kubera, the Donor of Wealth:

- Mantra Pushpam (from Taithreeya Aranyakam of Yajur Veda) which usually sung at the end of pooja and Homa (havan),  ends with “Kuberaya Vai Sravanaya Maha rajaya Namaha”, praising the King of Kings to bless us with Wealth.

- In the Lakshmi Narayana Kavacham (by Lord Bhairava) in the 5th stanza, the chant “Kubero api dhana adhyaksho dharma raajo yamah smrutaha”, means Kubera is the president of Wealth and Yama is for Dharma.

However, before chanting this mantra (or any other mantra), kindly chant the Gayatri Mantra to cleanse your soul.

Kubera is not the only God worshipped by Hindus on this day. There is also Lakshmi, the Goddess of Fortune, and Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles. Starting the homam with Ganpathi Pooja removes hindrances in the pooja process. Thus, by performing Lakshmi Kubera Homam on this day, we can please Lakshmi, Kubera, and Ganesha.
