Kurma avatar is the second manifestation of Lord Vishnu among the ten that the lord took to uphold righteousness in the universe. Kurma avatar belongs to Satya Yuga and the Lord appeared as a huge, divine tortoise to prevent the earth from destruction. One of the 18 puranas, Kurma Purana, is a direct expression of Lord Vishnu’s experience as Kurma to Sage Narada. Lord Kurma aided heavenly deities to obtain the nectar of immortality during the churning of the ocean. Lord Vishnu will show himself to safeguard his people in times of trouble and difficulties just as he did when the Mandara Mountain sank in the ocean while the gods and demons used it for churning.Varuthini Ekadashi is a day of holy fasting which is observed on the eleventh day of Krishna Paksha or the dark fortnight of the moon during the month of Chaitra or Chitra. On this day, Lord Vamana, the fifth incarnation of Maha Vishnu is worshipped with total devotion. The word Varuthini means protected and it is believed that a devotee who worships the lord on this day will be protected from all evils and blessed with plenty of wealth and fortune.
