Jyotirlingas are holy abodes of Lord Shiva. Jyoti means light and linga is the aniconic representation of Lord Shiva. When Brahma and Vishnu once argued as to who is superior, Lord Shiva appeared as a bright column of light that pierced all three worlds. Brahma and Vishnu were asked to find the two ends of the pillar in vain. Since brahma lied that he found the end he was cursed by Shiva that he would never be worshipped, on the other hand, lord Vishnu accepted defeat. The Jyotirlingas are powerful centers where the column of light was seen. There are 64 in all but only 12 of them called Dwadasha are very sacred and auspicious called Dwadasha Jyotirlingas. According to Puranas, Shiva’s presence exists in these 12 powerful temples. Performing Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Homam on Karthigai Deepam is very special as the day is dedicated to Lord Shiva who appeared as an endless column of light symbolizing the lord’s infinite form and spirit that can never be destroyed. Lord Shiva manifested as jyotirlinga on the night of Ardra nakshatra in Thiruvannamalai which is celebrated as Thirukarthigai or Karthigai Deepam, a festival of lamps. It’s a festival to remove ill influences or darkness of your life, and usher in joy and prosperity.

Energized Jyotirlinga (small) Absolves Sins, Karma, Gives Liberation, Peace

The Jyotirlinga is a powerful worship model of Lord Shiva. It denotes the primeval energy of the lord, his purity and omnipresent nature. It also represents the union of Shiva and Shakti. Vedic texts declare that installing a lingam in a house, or places of worship is highly beneficial. Worshipping the linga, cleanses sins and if any sinners live around the vicinity of the linga, it deals with them like a thunderbolt. It also grants the soul liberation, negates karmic effects and ensures peace in your home. According to Bhagavad Gita, creation takes place when Purusha and Prakriti unite, and the linga is a perfect example of this truth. Even Brahma and Vishnu are said to reside inside the lingam. Therefore, worshipping the linga, is like worshipping all gods.
