The Kanda Sashti Kavasam dedicated to Lord Muruga or Kartikeya is a divine hymn consisting of 244 lines that include four introductory lines called ‘Kaappu’. Written by Devaraya Swamigal, an ardent Lord Muruga devotee, the Tamil prayer resonates with the purest devotion of a devotee who has unshakable faith in the son of Lord Shiva. This rare gift to mankind is a valuable piece of poetry that when recited bestows success in daily life.
The Kavasam makes a person feel the divine presence of the lord, and Swamigal’s magical words string the sound of the lord’s footsteps and anklets into great melodious mantras. He says that the lord arrives swiftly to rescue the devotees from suffering and pain, and also protects every part of the body, from head to feet, from diseases and ailments. The prayer asks the lord to release the person from the vicious life cycle of birth and death. It seeks protection from wild animals like the tiger, fox wolf, etc, and venomous animals like scorpions, snakes, millipedes, spiders etc, evil forces, enemies, ghosts, and Brahma Rakshas who follow ladies. The poem is a call to evil forces to beware of the lord and his powerful weapons that can destroy them if they cause harm to the devotees.
Kanda Sashti Kavasam fervently appeals to the lord to forgive mistakes and sins. It is believed that by regular practice of this heavenly song, all predicaments of life can be resolved. Incurable diseases will be cured, it’s a boon to childless couples and allows peace and prosperity to abound. The Kavasam says that if one sincerely recites the verses, they will get blessings of gods from all eight directions and also the guardians of the eight directions. The beautiful lines also praise Lord Muruga for making Goddess Veera Lakshmi and the 27 Devas proud because the lord destroyed Soorapadman, a demon.
Vaikasi Vishakam signifies the birthday of Lord Muruga. It also signifies the day when the lord arrived on earth to free it from the clutches of demons, Soorapadman, Singamuhan and Tharakasura. This is a day of protection against evil and dark forces that cause great destruction. The auspicious day falls on a full moon in the month of Vaiskasi (May-June). It also coincides with Jyeshta Purnima, a propitious full moon day observed in honour of Savitri who followed Lord Yama to win back the life of her dead husband Satyavan. For married women, performing rituals on this day fetches blessings for a long life of their husbands, a blissful married life along with prosperity and success in all matters.
Kanda Sashti Kavasam is an armor to protect devotees from bad elements that surround them in any type of situation. The ritual to the divine song helps one to be safe in day-to-day life. Just as a warrior goes to battle by putting on heavy armor to protect his life, the Kanda Sashti Kavasam is also a strong sheath of covering in the form of mantras to save the devotees from adversities. The prayer lifts a person during struggles and emergencies.
The Kanda Sashti Kavasam is equivalent to Lord Muruga’s spear or vel. It acts as a shield for devotees from evil forces and energies that harass them. The Kanda Sashti Kavasam Homam keeps away worries, problems of all kinds, and childlessness away. Muruga is the overlord of Planet Mars and therefore all ill-effects of the planet can be removed. It’s a method to stay free of diseases and safeguard against wild and venomous animals. When a person seeks the Kavasam as a path of seeking refuge, it confers great spiritual blessings, prosperity, abundance, and peace. The Homam provides the knowledge of Goddess Saraswathi. The Homam attracts good fortune, health and also helps to maintain a cordial relationship with others. Performing ceremonies to Lord Skanda or Muruga bestows peace and happiness. The worship fulfills all wishes and also blesses the seeker with financial, career, and relationship success and shows the path to moksha.
Of all the six abodes of Lord Muruga this is the only temple that is located by the sea shore, while all other five abodes are on hilltops. Lord Muruga stayed here with his battalion of forces before he set out to kill Soorapadman. The temple is present on the shores of Bay of Bengal. Here lord Subramanya is worshipped as Senthilandavan or Senthilkumaran. The temple has nine theerthams, according to Sthala Purana or historical significance of the temple. A bath in these wells is believed to confer miraculous blessings for a devotee. The temple is significant for the demon Soorapadman’s killing as he was transformed to a peacock and cock. The miracle lord of Tiruchendur when worshipped cures incurable illnesses, bestows victory, destroys the enemy and grants all-around blessings to you.
In the battle against a demon, Soorapadma, Lord Subramanya received a precious gift from his mother, a spear. It is said to be very powerful and effective to keep off negative energies and can vanquish enemies. The Energized Vel from Vedicfolks made of brass can be kept in your puja altar or carried with you wherever you go. It shuns negative vibrations, malice and vice and ensures victory in all your undertakings. The spear of Subramanya represents dynamism and power of Shakti. It can remove darkness, ignorance and provide true wisdom. It helps to achieve spiritual progress that leads to the liberation of the soul.
