Goddess Jagadhatri is one of the incarnations of Goddess Durga. In the Shukla Paksha Navami of Ashwin, which falls during September-October, Devi appears as a ten-handed Goddess Durga, on the same tithi, a month later (October-November) she manifests as the four-handed Devi Jagadhatri, the caring mother who holds the world. The goddess’ iconography depicts her with four hands, which hold a conch, discus, shaft and bow respectively. She wears a snake as a sacred thread. She stands on a dead elephant demon called Karindrasura, which signifies the crushing of the ego of the gods. The gods were proud and arrogant as they thought that it was because of their weapons that she was able to demolish the demon Mahishasura. She appeared as Jagadhatri to teach them modesty and also make them realize her supreme power. The goddess is also said to be a combined form of Mother Bhuvaneshwari and Durga. Verse 173 of Lalitha Sahasranamam describes Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari as ‘Jagadhatri Vishvamaataa Jagaddhaatri Vishaalaakshi Viraagini Pragalbhaa Paramodaaraa Paraamodaa Manomayi Vishvamaataa’.

In West Bengal, this day is celebrated as Jagadhatri puja when the Goddess of Power, Jagadhatri is venerated for a plenitude of blessings.
Jagadhatri Puja and Homam are performed to the Mother Shakti form who is the ruler and protector of the universe. She is worshipped for prosperity and victory over enemies. According to the mystical leader, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, “Jagadhatri arises in the heart of a person who can control the frantic elephant called mind. Anyone who worships the goddess with devotion can vanquish the ego. He then becomes a servant of Brahman that manifests itself in the entire creation”.
