Haridra Ganapathi Homam

Among the numerous manifestations of Lord Ganesh, Haridra Ganapathi is one. This powerful form appeared to fulfill the demands of Mother Tripura Sundari – to destroy the demon Bhandasura. According to scriptures, the demon was worshipping an evil yantra called Abhichara yantra and the puja was spreading evil or unrighteousness among the masses. The Mother Goddess requested Haridra Ganapathi to destroy the yantra and thereby the supernatural wicked powers of the demon was eliminated. The word Haridra means turmeric and this form is made of turmeric powder which is considered lucky and auspicious. Therefore the lord is yellow in colour, and displays the krodha mudra (gesture of anger). The scriptures also say that mother Baglamukhi who is Peetambari Maa was pleased with this form of Ganesh and said that whoever worships Haridra Ganapathi will get whatever they ask for very quickly. A golden phase of life will begin for such devotees besides achieving good luck and success in all desires. Besides the energies, Riddhi (wealth) and Siddhi (skill), a third energy called Buddhi (intellect) also got attached to this form. Haridra Ganapathi Homam will be performed on Shukla paksha Chaturthi tithi in the month of Ashadha. Observing fasts and rituals on the day for Lord Ganesh is considered to be very auspicious.

Swayambu Selva Vinayakar Temple as the name denotes is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. It is situated in Shenbakkam, near Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. A total of 11 Ganapathi are seen in this shrine and all are self-manifested in the form of lingams forming the ‘Om’ symbol. It is believed that doing abhishekam with milk to Bala Vinayaka cures illness of children. He also blesses his devotees with timely marriage and children. The 11 forms appear in this order -  Bala Vinayaka, Nadana Vinayaka, Omkara Vinayaka, Karpaga Vinayaka, Chinthamani Vinayaka, Selva Vinayaka (main deity), Mayura Vinayaka, Mooshiga Vinayaka, Vallaba Vinayaka, Siddhi-Buddhi Vinayaka and Panchamuga Vinayaka. There’s a separate shrine for Somasundareswar in the form of linga. Even Lord Shani has a small abode facing the main deity which is of special significance. The 11 forms of Vinayaka not only grant 11-fold blessings, but also relieve the people from mental disorders and other health issues.
