Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated in the holy town of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Central India on the banks of the river, Shipra. It is said to be the largest of all the 12 Jyotirlingas and was self-manifested. Mahakaal means the lord of time and death. This is the only Jyotirlinga that faces south – Dakshinamurthi, as the rest of the 11 Jyotirlingas face east. South is the direction of death and therefore Lord Mahakaleshwar is the master of death. Lord Mahakaleshwar can prevent untimely death and bestow long life to his devotees.
It is believed that the ‘swamyambhu’ Jyotirlinga derives power on its own and does not require any mantra Shakti like other lingas and statues of gods.
The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple is a very ancient one as it has been mentioned in the Puranas that Prajapati Brahma established the temple first. The three-storeyed temple has the Omkareshwara Linga on the second floor and Nagchandeshwar linga on the third. The Mahakaleshwar Temple is also one of the 18 Shakti peetha temples and it is believed that Goddess Sati’s upper lip fell here and she is worshipped as Maha Kali, the consort of Mahakaal.
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Homam will be performed during Pradosha kala which is an auspicious time window that occurs twice a month both during Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. Those who worship Lord Shiva during this time are freed from the shackles of bondage and attain salvation. The time usually is from 4.30 to 6.00 during the twilight zone and people observe strict fasts and perform pujas to mitigate various problems, remove Karmic energies that limit one’s potential, and seek immediate blessings of Lord Shiva. According to Shiva Purana, performing pujas, fasting and other ceremonies during Pradosha can fetch wealth, children, happiness and honour to the devotees. The lord fulfills desires and grants mukthi (Salvation) when invoked during this time.

Sri Mahakaleswar temple is situated in Irumbai, near Pondicherry in the vicinity of Auroville Township. A rishi by the name of Maakalar installed three lingas in the country during his pilgrimage. One was Lord Mahakaleshwar in Irumbai, the others in Ujjain and Ambar-Maakalam near Mayiladuthurai in Tanjavur district. The main deity of the temple is a self-manifested linga which split into three faces which is said to represent lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
