‘Purna Avatar’ Adi Purush has All 16 ‘Kalas’ or Attributes

According to the Bhagavad Gita, there are 24 incarnations of Lord Vishnu that appeared on earth to fight evil and guide people towards the right path. Adi Purush Avatar is the primary one of them all. Adi Purush, also known as Narayana, is depicted lying on Shesh Naag, a huge serpent with thousands of heads. This form is considered the source of all creations in the universe. This first incarnation of the lord is full of 16 ‘kalas’ or attributes that makes Him a Purna (Complete) Avatar. It is from Adi Purush’s navel that Lord Brahma, seated on a lotus, sprouts out. He is the supreme lord or Purushotama, the greatest godhead the one who pervades all beings – from the smallest speck of life to the largest. He is Mukunda, the one who bestows Mukti or salvation from struggles of the material world.

Lord Adi Purush has infinite powers to protect all living beings, and when life ends, he absorbs them all unto Him. Bhagavata Purana refers to the lord as Para Brahman, the supreme lord, and Bhagavad Gita refers to Him as Viswarupa, having the form of the universe. Worshipping Adi Purush at whose feet sits Goddess Lakshmi, gives dual blessings of both deities for wealth, riches and immense prosperity forever.

Adi Purush Homam will be performed as part of the Chaturvimshatihi Avatara Series of Homam which means the 24 avatars of Lord Vishnu. On the auspicious day of Amalaki Ekadashi, Lord Adi Purush will be invoked who is the supreme pre-eminent form with a desire to commence creation. This form can only be seen by yogins and sages who have attained divine knowledge. It is the imperishable seed from which all other creations manifest themselves.

Why Amalaki Ekadasi Is Important?

Amalaki Ekadasi is observed on the 11th day in the Phalgun month (Tamil month Masi) during the waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) and it is dedicated to Amalaki or Indian Gooseberry tree. Observing this day brings great prosperity and other benefits to the devotee. Lord Vishnu, for whom all ekadashis are sacred, is worshipped on this day because it is believed that he resides in the tree. In Brahmanda Purana, Lord Vishnu says that a person, who observes a fast on Amalaki Ekadashi releases himself from all kinds of sins, gets vast wealth, and attains liberation. Also, performing ceremonies on the day is highly cleansing i.e. equal to donating one thousand cows in charity to a pure Brahmin.
