Goddess Maha Shakthi, the ever powerful, manifests herself in various Shakthi peethas or divine places. There are about 51 Shakthi peethas which came into existence when the body parts and ornaments of the goddess fell in different points scattered across India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan and Bhutan.
Goddess Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva, was angry with her father Daksha for not inviting her consort to a grand yagya organised by her father. Furthermore, he also insulted Lord Shiva by demeaning his looks and lifestyle. A very depressed Sati in her angst jumped into a sacrificial fire.
An enraged Lord Shiva carried his consort’s body on the shoulders and did the tandav (cosmic dance) continuously neglecting his duties. Lord Vishnu wanted to get Lord Shiva back to his senses and therefore using his Sudharshan chakra slashed the body of the goddess without Lord Shiva’s knowledge. One part the body, yoni or vulva (genital) fell at a place on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam. The temple is devoted to the presiding deity

Ambubachi Festival/Mela Glorifies the Power of Women
The Ambubachi mela is an annual festival celebrated every year in the month of June. This year it is being celebrated from 22nd to 25th June. The goddess is going through her annual menstrual cycle during this time. The doors of the Kamakhya temple remain closed during this period. The temple opens after the deity is bathed and other rituals are undertaken. This type of esoteric customs is part of the Tantric cult. It’s interesting to note that the river Brahmaputra near the temple turn red during this time. It’s a way to glorify women and monthlies are a symbol of woman’s creativity especially to give birth to a new life. So, the festival celebrates the ‘shakthi’ or power within every woman.
