About mighty Goddess Shailaputri

Goddess Shailaputri is the daughter of Mountain King Himavat; she is an important incarnation of goddess Sati. Shailaputri Devi is the epitome of kindness, affection and patience. She is a significant manifestation of supreme Durga Devi and holds the first position among Navadurga. The prominent goddess is worshipped first during the Navratri celebration. Shailaputri Devi is represented with a half-moon embedded in her brow and holds a trident in one hand and a lotus in the other. Nandi, the bull of supreme lord Shiva, is the vehicle of Goddess Shailputri.

Legends linked with Goddess Shailaputri

Goddess Shailaputri is a significant avatar of goddess Sati. In this avatar, she was the daughter of King Daksha Prajapati. Sati Devi married Lord Shiva by going against her father. This infuriated King Daksha, and once, when he organised a Maha yagna at his place, he didn't invite Sati and Shiva. But Devi Sati attended the yagna without Daksha's permission. At yagna, Goddess Sati felt that nobody was happy seeing her except her mother. To express anger for her and Lord Shiva's insult, she jumped into a sacrificial fire and immolated herself. Lord Shiva got angry, and he beheaded King Daksha. At the right time, Lord Vishnu intervened, and he revived King Daksha by replacing his head with that of a goat. Lord Shiva was roaming helplessly with the burnt body of Sati.

Vishnu used her Sudarshana chakra and cut Sati's body into several pieces. The places where body parts, clothes and jewels of goddess Sati fell are now revered as Shakti Peethas. In the next life, Goddess Sati took birth as Goddess Shailaputri or Devi Parvati and married Lord Shiva again.
