Shumbha and Nishumbha sent Chanda and Munda to fight with the devas. Chandi Devi went to the battlefield to fight Chanda and Munda. To fight the battle, she manifested another goddess known as Kalaratri. They fought with Chanda and Munda, bringing them to a brutal end. Both of them became prominent and acquired the name Chamunda.

Another prominent legend states that the mighty Kali created the goddess Kalaratri. Kalaratri rode on a donkey and brought demons, Chanda and Munda, to goddess Kali after demolishing them.
